Royal Oak — Gilda’s Club in Detroit will host 17 medical delegates from the Near East and North Africa in Michigan as part of an exchange program to explore breast cancer awareness and community outreach. The group that includes high-level medical experts will convene at Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit, 3517 Rochester Road, Royal Oak, 48073, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13 to learn about the Gilda’s Club mission and the programs it provides to men, women and children impacted by cancer?
“What a wonderful chance for Gilda’s Club to contribute to international understanding of our mission and community outreach efforts,” said Rose K. Adams, CEO of Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit. “We are honored to have the opportunity to show this high-level delegation of medical leaders the value and effectiveness that our emotional and social support programs bring to people faced with a cancer diagnosis.”
Among the members of the delegation are the program coordinator for the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt, a member of the Riyadh Breast Cancer Committee in Saudi Arabia, the founder of the Syrian Society for Breast Cancer Protection, a radiation therapist of August Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem’s West Bank, and the coordinator of the Comprehensive Breast Care Clinic in Israel. Other areas represented include Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Oman.
Selected by American embassies abroad and funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the individuals come to the United States to meet and confer with their professional counterparts and to gain an appreciation of the ethnic, cultural, political, and socio-economic diversity of the U.S. The delegation’s three-week mission has included visits in Washington D.C. with First Lady Laura Bush, the founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker and members of the Congressional Cancer Caucus.
Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit is a nonprofit community that provides emotional and social support to men, women and children impacted by cancer. All lectures, support and wellness groups, educational lectures, creative arts classes, youth and teen events and social activities are free to members.
