DETROIT — The Central United Methodist Church of Detroit will hold its annual Justice and Peace Banquet here on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. The church is looking for sponsors to assist it in meeting the needs of many — seniors living on fixed incomes, the homeless who rely on the sandwiches and medical assistance and the empowering relationships its social work staff provides, once productive workers who were laid off and have now lost everything, the children who are too often victims of violence in their homes and on the street, the men and women who are living with HIV/Aids and many others. This year CMU honors (among others) peace and justice advocates: Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who stood alone against fund ing for the war in Iraq– the vote was 420-1! She is the Maryann Mahaffey Awardee and Guest Speaker. Congressman John Conyers is Henry Hitt Crain Awardee. Ms. Millie Hall, President of Coalition of Labor Union Women, is Worker for Justice Awardee. Charlie & Jean Dietrick Rooney, former leaders of MCHR, will receive the Pastor’s Award.
Dinner reservations are $100. Contact Inez Torbert, (313) 965-5422.
