Halima Muse, a Muslim woman working as a screener at Toronto International Airport, was suspended from her job because she wore a skirt longer than the regulation skirt provided by Garda, her employer. Garda requested direction from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), with whom it has the contract, but CATSA stood firm — no exceptions to the dress code. The Teamsters Union has filed a grievance against Garda, and on November 19 the union and the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Garda has now agreed to give Muse a desk job while the issue is being resolved.
