Recently, a Muslim student was sexually assaulted on an Ottawa campus. At first, the media described the assault as rape, a description which was later corrected. The woman made a point of having the correction noted because of the shame associated in some Muslim traditions with being the victim of rape. In response to the situation, the Council on American-Islamic Relations Canada (CAIR-CAN) and the Islamic Social Services Association issued a joint statement. “Only a distorted cultural view would motivate someone to reject a victim of sexual assault. This callous attitude has absolutely no place in Islam,” they declared. They cited Qur’anic verses indicating that no one should be punished for the crimes of another. “Victims of any crime,” they said, “and particularly the crime of sexual assault, must have the support of both the justice system and of the communities in which they live. Faith is a source of comfort, not a source of shame for the victims.”
