DEARBORN — Michigan’s oldest continuous tribute to men and women who have died in U.S. military service, Dearborn’s annual Memorial Day Parade, is set to take place in east Dearborn on Monday, May 26.
The parade will start at 10 a.m. along Michigan Avenue from Firestone Street to Schaefer Road.
The city considered the possibility of moving the parade to west Dearborn, because of ongoing construction at the Greenfield Road bridge over Michigan Avenue, where the parade usually begins.
But plans were made to move the launching point to Firestone Street to avoid the mess and keep the parade in the east end.
“Dearborn is a community that takes Memorial Day very seriously. Being able to maintain the parade’s customary route is an important way to help continue a great city tradition,” said Mayor Jack O’Reilly in a release.
The 84th annual commemoration will pay special tribute to those who care for wounded service men and women. Surgeon General of the Navy Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, Jr. will serve as the parade’s grand marshal.
The Association of Patriotic Arab Americans will participate to recognize Arab Americans who have served their country in the military.
After the parade, the Army will feature a display outside of the Arab American National Museum featuring video presentations and interactive exhibits.
Members of Dearborn’s veterans’ organizations, bands from several local schools, youth groups and community service organizations are also set to participate.
Flyovers by modern and historic military aircraft are scheduled.
