DEARBORN — On Saturday, June 14, as classic car enthusiasts participate in the first inaugural “Rock’n Rotary Classic Cruise” hosted by the Rotary Club of Dearborn, they will help ensure the establishment of a room for the comfort of terminally ill patients and their families at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.
“Our club has initiated this event as a way to highlight Dearborn’s outstanding historic landmarks and to also raise money for many worthy community projects including the establishment of a Patient Comfort Room at Oakwood,” said Nancy Siwik, president of the Rotary Club of Dearborn.
The Patient Comfort Room is being designed to provide the best possible experience for patients and their families to spend their final moments together in a peaceful and private setting.
When the Rotary Club of Dearborn heard about Oakwood’s need for the special room, members quickly responded. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Dearborn has helped fund a number of local community projects as well as support international projects to help eradicate polio, provide clean drinking water and other relief efforts.
More recently, the Rotary Club of Dearborn has contributed funds to the Kingfisher Bluff project overlooking the Rouge River, at Henry Ford Community College and an observation room at the Environmental Interpretive Center on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus.
“Thanks to a number of successful fundraisers along with individual member contributions, we’ve been able to make a substantial impact locally and worldwide,” added Siwik.
The “Rock’n Rotary Classic Cruise” will be the first cruise of its kind in Dearborn.
Drivers and classic car enthusiasts will be directed to a variety of historic landmarks located throughout Dearborn to showcase their cars, learn more about the local history, visit area shopping districts and sample the city’s tempting variety of restaurants and other attractions.
Car registration and family-oriented activities will be held at Ford Field in west Dearborn. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and beginning at noon, cruisers will be invited to take part in a short parade down Michigan Avenue before driving to different historic locations around town.
Destinations include the Automotive Hall of Fame, Dearborn Historical Museum, Ford World Headquarters, The Henry Ford, Rouge Plant, Dearborn City Hall and Dearborn Inn. The day-long event will conclude with a “Rock’n Roll 50’s Sock Hop” from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center.
Sponsors for the event include Dearborn Federal Savings Bank, Dearborn Sausage, Henry Ford Community College, HFCC-Federation of Teachers, Park Place and Ford-Tel Marathon.
