DEARBORN — Arab American comedy has been rising in popularity in recent years as a great source of laughter and therapy for a group of people caught between two identities.
On Friday, Aug. 15 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, Arabs and non-Arabs alike can soak up all the ethnic idiosyncrasies and neuroses they can handle at the second annual Arab American Comedy show.
The show starts at 7 p.m. and is set to feature four live theatrical sketches and two short films, with New York standup comic Meena Dimian as MC.
Inspired by the five year-old New York Arab American Comedy Festival, the event spotlights local actors, actresses and comedians who will take the stage to perform sketch comedy and short films written, produced and directed by Arab Americans.
In addition to pure fun, organizers call it an effort to humanize the Arab experience through comedy.
The Saturday Night Live-inspired sketches include “Samia’s Cup,” a coffee shop that dares to sell only Arab coffee, and “Living It Up,” a sequel to one of last year’s favorite sketches, about an Arab American woman and her white husband hosting her very traditional family for dinner.
The show will also feature a short film spoof similar to last year’s award-winning short “Cribs Arab American Style,” which can be seen, along with ticket and other information about the show, at www.mizna.tv.
