DEARBORN — The city will suspend enforcement of Public Service Day parking rules near polling sites on election day, Tuesday, Nov. 4, to allow voters to cast their ballots without worrying about the twice-a-month parking restrictions.
Public Service Day parking rules will be enforced as normal that day on streets not near polling sites, the city said in a release.
In every Dearborn neighborhood, on trash pickup day during the first and third full weeks of the month, parking is prohibited on city streets from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The rules are intended to allow city work crews to reach curb to curb for services like street sweeping and leaf collection.
Police began ticketing cars on the street during designated Public Service Day times on October 6.
Citations cost violators $35 or $70 after three days.
Tickets can be paid 24 hours a day through a secure drop box inside the main lobby of the 19th District Court, 16077 Michigan Avenue. Payments can also be mailed to that address, with $35 being accepted if postmarked within three days of receiving the ticket. If paying in person, the city advises waiting until the day after the ticket was issued, to allow record of the ticket to be processed and avoid delays.
Dearborn officials began announcing new Public Service Days rules in Oct., 2007, when a city newsletter was mailed to every household.
Street signs with the parking rules have also been posted in every neighborhood.
Residents who are unable to remove parked vehicles from neighborhood streets may qualify for an exemption permit allowing them to park on the street in front of their own property. Visit www.cityofdearborn.org, call 943-2276 or visit police headquarters for a petition form. Applying for the exemption requires documents and photographs proving inability to comply with the rules.
