DEARBORN — American Jewish doctor and peace activist Alice Rothchild has been touring the country telling about her experiences in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
She’ll be in Troy on Sunday for a book signing and in Detroit on Monday to interview survivors of “AlNakba,” or “the catastrophe” — the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians driven out of their homes for the creation of the Jewish state in 1948.
The author of “Broken Promises: Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience” will give a presentation on March 29 at Lutheran Church of the Master, 3333 Coolidge Highway in Troy 6:30 p.m.
She’s scheduled on March 30 at the University of Detroit-Mercy, 4001 W. McNichols in Detroit, in Life Sciences building room 113, at 5:15 p.m. and again at 7:15 p.m.
Rothchild will engage displaced Palestinian victims of the occupation as part of the Monday event, in interviews that could be used in her next book, said Sagger Mawri, president of U of D-Mercy’s Arab Cultural Society, which is co-sponsoring the event with Jewish Voice for Peace, American Jews for a Just Peace and the Palestine Office.
“Through first-hand narratives, I invite the reader to engage in a different kind of conversation about Israel and Palestine rooted in Jewish humanism, grounded in empathy and forgiveness, and coupled with an appreciation of the urgent need for political action,” Rothchild has said about her book.
“She stands in solidarity with the Palestinians, with their rights,” Mawri said. “Coming from a person who is not Arab, I think gives it emphasis… We hope to get non-Arabs to come and learn about this very important topic.”
