ROYAL OAK — More than 900,000 Michigan adults have chronic kidney disease and most don’t even know it. The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) wants you to help in the fight against kidney disease.
The Detroit Zoo will host the 13th annual Kidney Walk on Sunday, May 17.
The NKFM welcomes people of all ages to join in the fun by walking individually or by forming a team with friends and family. The festivities begin with registration at 7:30 am and the Kidney Walk begins at 8:30 am. More than 4,000 people are expected to attend the one-and-a-half mile walk and the NKFM hopes to raise $350,000.
“Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease,” said NKFM President and CEO Daniel Carney. “Since 70 percent of those cases may have been prevented, the Detroit Zoo Kidney Walk will draw attention to the importance of early detection while raising funds for kidney patients and their families.”
The day will include food and refreshments, live music, children’s activities and much more. All walkers are eligible for great prizes and every person who raises $100 will receive an official walk t-shirt. Participants can enjoy music, face painting, giveaways, raffles, refreshments and much more. Dialysis patients and their care givers will also receive free massages, haircuts, fleece blankets, and other fun gifts at the Champions’ Tent.
Brad Miller, CEO of Mars Snackfood U.S. is the Honorary Chair of the Walk and health and fitness expert Peter Nielsen will also give a presentation to all those attending.
Kidney Walk sponsors include Meijer, Fresenius Medical Care, Mars Snackfood U.S., Greenfield Health Systems, William Beaumont Hospital, 94.7 WCSX, Foresters, George Weston Bakeries Inc., Michigan Kidney Consultants P.C., CB Richard Ellis, Henry Ford Transplant Institute, and Imago Salon and Spa.
