LANSING — The state House on Wednesday adopted a resolution wishing Michigan Muslims a happy Ramadan.
The Muslim holy month of fasting, prayer and charitable giving starts this week.
The resolution does includes a couple of mistakes. According to a version of the document posted on the legislature’s website, the resolution includes a description of Eid Al-Fitr as “the celebration marking the start of the fasting month of Ramadan.” The holiday in fact marks the end of Ramadan.
It also states that there are about 300,000 Muslims in the U.S. Most estimates actually place the number of American Muslims between 5 and 7 million.
But the resolution, introduced by Rep. Gino Polidori of Dearborn and co-sponsored by 17 other representatives, expresses “warmest wishes to Muslims in Michigan and beyond on the observance of Ramadan.”
“This is a very important time for many of my constituents,” Polidori said. “It is a time of fasting, self-sacrifice and inner spiritual reflection for the more than one billion Muslims around the world that celebrate Ramadan. My thoughts are with my constituents and with the many Muslim families around Michigan during this important holy month.”
