Mohammed Abul-Fazal Chowdhury

Authorities have called the death a suicide.
Chowdhury was being held in Macomb County Jail after being charged with murdering his wife.

His attorney has asked for an independent investigation of the death.

Macomb officials have said no evidence was found of the involvement of anyone else in the 22-year-old’s death.

They said he locked himself in his cell, used a razor blade from a shaving device to cut off his penis, flush it down the toilet, then slice an artery in his neck.

The gruesome nature of the death have led some to question whether it was indeed suicide.

Chowdhury’s body was turned over to his murdered wife’s family for burial in their native Bangladesh.
