Several organizations led by the Muslim Student Association at the University of Michigan-Dearborn are scheduled to hold a “Know Your Rights” forum on Jan. 28, 4 p.m on campus in the CASL building.
Speakers are to discuss what rights a person has when stopped, questioned, arrested or searched by law enforcement.
Fears and concerns over giving charity to Muslim organizations are also to be discussed.
An FBI raid on a Detroit Muslim group last year in which agents shot and killed a religious leader resulted in the culmination of long-running tensions between law enforcement and Muslim communities over the use of informants in places of worship. That issue is also topic of discussion for the forum.
Council on American Islamic Relations Michigan Executive Director Dawud Walid, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Regional Director Imad Hamad and FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Andrew Arena are to speak on charitable giving, interactions with law enforcement and other civil rights issues.
The Muslim Student Association, Arab Student Union, Thaqalayn Muslim Association, Student Government and Amnesty International are co-sponsoring the event.
