LATHRUP VILLAGE — The City of Detroit Substance Abuse and Prevention Program at the Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) has been working closely with the counselors, principals and social workers at Riverside Academy West ( Dearborn) and K.B. White Elementary (Detroit) to identify the needs of its female students and develop clubs that focus on dealing with these issues.These clubs were designed to provide young women with an opportunity to identify what’s important to them and to learn about themselves. The objectives of the club are for young girls to become more self-sufficient, positive and productive while increasing their self- esteem and building character through sensory activities and discussions. Activities include arts and crafts, discussions, life skills, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) awareness, team work and diversity. The club symbol is the butterfly as it represents femininity, beauty, grace, uniqueness and freedom.Clubs focus on the 6 Self’s of success: -Self-Esteem -Self-Exploration-Self-Image -Self-Sufficiency-Self-Improvement -Self-ConfidenceThe Riverside Academy West (Dearborn) club, the All About Me Girls Club, works with 6th and 7th grade girls on Tuesdays from 3:15 pm to 4:30pm. K.B. White Elementary’s (Detroit) Unique Butterflies Club works with 5th and 6th grade girls every Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:30 pm.
