Peter J. Lu, a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University,  will give a lecture on Modern Math in Medieval Islamic Architecture at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn on Monday October 4 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The lecture examines recent findings that deal with the patterns found in the tiles in the 1200 C.E. and lines on medieval architecture which cause them to believe a breaking though occurred in the creating of these designs. These were not understood in the West until the 1970s. Lu will discuss some of the properties of such Islamic tilings known as quasicrystalline tilings. The lecture is sponsored the Detroit Institute of Arts

Lu received his BA summa cum laude in physics in 2000 from Princeton University, and Masters in 2002 and PhD in 2008 in physics from Harvard University.
