The Campbell Soup Co. has been dealing with a boycott after its Canadian subsidiary produced a line of soups that are certified as halal, or prepared according to Islamic dietary laws. Production began in January and the boycott started this month.
Campbell’s has 15 halal-certified products. |
Pamela Geller, one of the first to ask for the boycott, is upset due to the fact that the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) certified these soups as halal. Prosecutors unsuccessfully attempted to tie ISNA to the terrorist group Hamas in a 2007 case.
Jewish and Protestant organizations issued statements in support of ISNA, who has always denied extremism and violence.
According to Campbell’s Spokesperson John Faulkner, Campbell investigated ISNA’s background and found “no issues of concern.” ISNA was referred to Campbell by a Canadian trade organization whose own companies have used ISNA for their halal certification for years.
In advertisements for the soup, Campbell calls ISNA “the largest nonprofit, religious, educational, and non-political Islamic organization in North America.”
Faulkner also stated that Campbell has tried to point out to those supporting the boycott that the ISNA is a legimate entity and that Campbell feels very comfortable working with them.
Campbell hasn’t noticed any effect on its sales since the boycott began.
