DEARBORN — Humor is often thought to be a bridge. Many use humor to bridge cultural divides and open the door for conversation. It is used to make the what is not up for discussion, easier to talk about.

This is exactly what co-creators Mike Eshaq and Mike McGettigan accomplish with their upcoming webseries “The Ed and Moe Show.”

Eshaq and McGettigan  are known for their online spoof entitled “Cribs: Arab American Style,” where they produced their own version of “MTV’s Cribs.”  Their ability to find humor in everyday life is showcased in this new web series. Eshaq said Cribs laid the foundation for “The Ed and Moe Show.”

“McGettigan and I have been working together for years as actors and film makers and a lot of our work over the years has influenced “Ed and Moe,” said Eshaq, who is also the executive producer. “The video Cribs put us in the hot seat and we said we have to do more.”

“The Ed and Moe Show” follows the daily lives of two Dearborn residents, Ed and Mohammed, who are on their quest to live what Eshaq calls “the American dream” and become businessmen.

Ed is played by Sean McGettigan, the producer’s brother, and Mohammed  is played by Ali  “Bull Dog” Abdallah, who appeared in the duo’s spoof  of “Cribs.”

Mohammed, or Moe, is a Palestinian-Lebanese American who left a successful career as an engineer to pursue his dream to be a businessman, like the rest of his family members. He sold his house, cars and belongings, choosing to live in his grandmother’s garage as he pursues this goal, while spending a lot of time playing video games.

Ed is an Irish Catholic who is so immersed in the Arab American culture, that it is easy to forget that he is not an Arab American. He will tell you that he is not an Arab American but that he just is comfortable using Arabic phrases and dating only Arabic women.

Eshaq and McGettigan do not shy away from what can be seen as politically incorrect material in the series. They touch subjects of culture clashing, religion and even interracial relationships…all with plenty of humor.

“Ed’s biggest vice is his infatuation with Arab women. …who have to jump out of windows after their parents are asleep just to see him. But he just says ‘If I am getting a girl who has to jump out of a window late at night to see me…I know she comes from a good family.'”

Eshaq knows that his series will not please everyone. Although the show’s website and Facebook page are covered in positive comments from viewers who have seen short clips and deleted scenes, Eshaq says he has received some negative responses.

“Anyone who watches the show will see this is an honest story of two people trying to live the American dream. Arabs that are very prideful will hate the show. I have received e-mails saying  ‘Why do you have to make a show about an Arab who lives in a garage,’ so, you are not going to please everyone.

“Our main purpose is just to make people laugh and we want to be very truthful about our approach to Dearborn. We want to make people laugh and do something that is very close to our hearts and in the process we are going to show Dearborn,” he added.

The show takes place in Dearborn, and Eshaq hopes that those who watch the show will have any misconceptions about the city cleared up.

“We wanted to do something about our hometown Dearborn and show that Dearborn is not this sharia law city that some of the right wing conservatives are trying to trout,” he said. “We wanted to do a story about these funny guys from Dearborn and show that Dearborn is just like any other city. It’s a clash of cultures and it’s another example that this is America. It’s a melting pot, it’s people coming together. There are characters that are Arab, Mexican, white, we are not only focusing on Arabs but everyone who lives in the city because we are a very diverse city.”

“The Ed and Moe Show” does not have a release date as of yet, but Eshaq is hoping to be finished with the first season by January 2011, at which time Middle Eastern American TV would be able to broadcast the web series.
