The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor soccer team scored an upset victory over Maryland on Saturday, Dec. 4 to punch the program’s first-ever ticket to the College Cup, NCAA soccer’s equivalent to basketball’s Final Four.
The Wolverines, who are led by a trio of all-conference Arab Americans including Hamoody Saad and Soony Saad from Dearborn, will play Akron in Santa Barbara, California at 11 p.m. ET on Friday , Dec. 10. The game will be broadcast on the ESPN2 television station.
Michigan previously dropped a 7-1 decision to the Zips earlier in the year but freshman Soony Saad said earlier that the team was still bonding at that point and that they are an entirely different group now as the young team has matured.
In the Maryland game, Michigan won by a 3-2 score in overtime on a goal from Brazilian Fabio Pereira on an assist from Hamoody Saad.
Justin Meram also had a goal to continue his hot streak while Soony Saad led the team in shots with five.
Michigan is on a nine-game winning streak heading into the matchup with Akron and has won 13 of its last 15 games.
