A local family is desperately seeking the help of the community in saving the life of Ali Hafeez Habhab, a 22 year old from Kfarhouna, Lebanon, who was diagnosed with liver cancer two months ago.
When they learned that an immediate liver transplant would save his life, Ali’s family began a frantic search for a matching donor. His youngest sister, Sally was tested and found to be a match; however, the family does not have the financial means to proceed with the operation. Since Lebanese hospitals do not possess the capability to perform the surgery, it was determined that Ali must be flown to France or to Italy to undergo the surgery. After learning that estimated costs for this procedure will reach over half a million dollars, and with no health insurance to help cover any of the expenses, the family is faced with an enormous financial dilemma.
Ali’s oldest sister, Nancy, was diagnosed with the same disease in November 2007 and died less than two weeks later. Nancy was 27 years old and left behind 3 children, Ali, Lea, and Leen. The family is still mourning her loss, and has yet to recover from losing her so quickly.
One month prior to Ali’s diagnosis, he had begun working on his Master’s degree in biology, with plans to dedicate his life to researching a cure for the disease that claimed his sister’s life. Ali and his family were unaware that tragedy would strike them once again, as he too would soon be diagnosed with this brutal disease.
While Ali’s family lacks the necessary assets and financial means to fund this operation and save their son, family members, friends, and local community members are refusing to give up hope. They are calling on the community to give this young man a chance to live and to follow his dreams by helping with his medical costs.
Ali’s parents, sisters, cousins and his entire extended family are desperately seeking assistance in raising funds to help with his medical costs and in trying to save his life. Please extend your helping hand and if you are unable to help financially, please light a candle, say a prayer, and may the spirit of this holiday season be with you and with your loved ones.
