Gov. Rick Snyder’s dollar budget plan includes $1.2 billion in permanent spending cuts to respond to the $1.4 billion state deficit. The budget eliminates before and after school programs and state jobs. Snyder is expected to eliminate the Michigan Business Tax and replace it with a six percent corporate income tax, a promise he made during his campaign. Dearborn and Dearborn Heights school officials are concerned about Snyder’s proposals. Dearborn Heights District Seven Superintendent, Jeffery Bartold says weeks ago school officials were notified the state school aid fund had a surplus of $520 million. In a news report Bartold said, “if there’s a surplus, how do you justify a $470 (per pupil) cut to schools?” Also in a report, Dearborn Public Schools Communications Coordinator David Mustonen said the $470 per student cut would cost Dearborn Schools around $8.6 million. The city receives financial assistance of $8,648 per pupil.
