The Comcast cable network, America’s largest provider, is reportedly in discussions with Al Jazeera English to bring the channel into millions of U.S. homes, the Doha, Qatar-based network said on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The channel has received a great deal of extra attention because of its unfiltered coverage of Arab uprisings in Egypt as well as Tunisia and other countries. Viewers from the United States have helped drive up Al Jazeera’s Internet traffic, especially for live streaming video, as the events in the Middle East have unfolded.
“We’re very grateful for all the support and appreciation we’ve been receiving,” Al-Jazeera English managing director Al Anstey said in a statement. “Clearly the demand is there for Al Jazeera, and people want to see us on their screens.”
Anstey arrived in New York City on Tuesday to lead the talks, the network said. The Comcast meeting was the first move in a new push by Al Jazeera to get on U.S. cable systems, which have been reluctant to add the network.
Al Jazeera has more journalists in the Middle East than any U.S. news agency and its name is Arabic for “the island.” Its signal has been jammed by Libyan state intelligence officials during the current popular uprising and its Cairo bureau was ransacked by former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s forces in Egypt’s uprising as well.
