DEARBORN – Police are seeking assistance in locating a suspect involved in the fatal shooting of Jay Shin, a shopkeeper at the Sunrise Beauty Supply located at 4920 Schaefer, Dearborn.
The shooting occurred just after 11:00 am on Tuesday, when the suspect stole approximately 80 “Velvet Remi” brand hair extensions in an assortment of colors. Each extension is valued between $120.00 and $135.00 each. The suspect fled the scene in a silver four-door vehicle. There may have also be another African American male and an African American female also involved in the robbery.
“This appears to be a random and senseless crime that will be subjected to all our investigative resources,” said Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad in a press release.
“He was a very nice man, he always had a smile on his face,” Susan Hajhassan of the Masri Clinic on the corner of Schaefer and Michigan Avenue said of the shopkeeper.
According to two workers from a nearby store, there had been little sign of suspicious activity leading up to the events of Tuesday except for occasional shoplifting incidents.
Those in the area were alarmed and surprised by the armed robbery. According to a local clerk at a nearby store who did not want to be identified, two workers at a next-door business to the beauty shop were said be “feeling ill” from the lingering effects of the shooting and went home a short time after police arrived on the scene.
Hajhassan said that she and her coworkers were “shaken up” by the incident.
“They’re all freaked out by what happened,” she said.
Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The suspect, who was seen on a security video from businesses in the area, is described as a dark skinned African American male, 20 – 25 years, 5’10, thin build, wearing a green waist length hooded jacket with “Packers” written across the front, grey sweatpants, tan boots, and a baseball hat.
This was the second armed robbery in Dearborn this week, with another occurring near Fairlane Mall when three men robbed a woman shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle and were caught up by police on Southfield Freeway. One suspect was apprehended and the other allegedly fired several shots at the officers before turning the gun on himself according to police. The third suspect ran away on foot, and is still being located.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or the Dearborn Police tip line at 313-943-3012.
