DEARBORN — Nearly 200 parents, teachers, administrators,
legislators and students gathered at Edsel Ford High School in opposition to
Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposed budget cuts towards funding Michigan
education.
Speakers included Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn), Wayne
County Commissioner Gary Woronchak, Dearborn Public Schools Supt. Brian
Whiston, Dearborn PTSA President Colette Dunsmore, Rep. David Nathan
(D-Detroit) and Dearborn Federation of School Employees President Rodger Bartles.
According to figures released by the district, Dearborn
could lose more than $14 million in funding, $8.7 million in per student
funding, $435,000 in Section 41 bilingual education funding among other cuts.
Although Snyder’s budget proposes a cut of $470 per pupil, other school
districts including Dearborn say the number is higher. According to Whiston
it’s about $1,200 per pupil for Dearborn. Whiston said the impact would be
outdated books, larger class sizes and fewer computers for schools. The crowd’s presence was strong as many
of its members made emotional statements.
Teachers and parents are encouraged to engage in Lansing
demonstrations against the cuts, in addition to sending letters and making
phone calls to the state capital. Those interested in getting involved can

4.
