DEARBORN — The Qana Al-Jalil Committee in cooperation with
the Congress of Arab American Organizations in Michigan will hold the 5th and
15th annual commemorations of the 1996 and 2006 Qana massacres, which took
place in the Lebanese city.
The event will be held at the Islamic Center of America in
Dearborn, on Sunday, Apr. 17 at 10 a.m.
for victims. Qana became a sister city of Dearborn in 1999. Two Dearborn
residents were killed in the attacks on the city by Israeli forces in 1996.
The 1996 massacre occurred when a clearly marked UN compound
was bombed by the Israeli army, killing 106 civilians while injuring 116
others. A UN investigation later determined it was unlikely the bombing was
done in error.
The second massacre in the same city happened in 2006, where
56 were killed including 32 children according to the Lebanese Red Cross and
was condemned by the Human Rights Watch organization because of “the
consistent failure to distinguish combatants from civilians” as a
“war crime.”
The ICA is located at 19500 Ford Rd. in Dearborn. Breakfast will be served
