WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new poll released on April 11 found that Americans strongly support
Arab World uprisings but are split on whether or not democracy will be the
final result, according to a new poll.
When asked about the effect on the U.S. “if the
countries of the Middle East become more democratic,” respondents said it
would be mostly positive by 65 percent to 31 percent. In “the long
run,” 76 percent saw the trend as positive.
A total of 57 percent also said that they “would want
to see a country become more democratic even if this resulted in the country
being more likely to oppose U.S. policies.”
The poll also found that 51 percent expect more democracy to
prevail and 47 percent of
respondents doubt it. Republican respondents were more pessimistic while
Democrats were more optimistic.
In addition, 45 percent see the revolts as mostly everyday
people seeking freedom compared with the other choice of “Islamist groups
seeking political power.”
