LIVONIA – The Richardson, Texas-based Muslim Legal Fund of
America, a 501(c)(3) charity that
supports legal cases impacting civil rights and liberties in America, including
many involving Michigan residents, held its second annual benefit dinner in the
state of Michigan on Saturday, April 23 with TV host Cenk Uygur serving as
keynote speaker at Burton Manor.
The organization holds numerous banquets in other states as
well to raise funds.
Uygur, the host of the highly popular ‘The Young Turks’
daily web television talk show and an MSNBC contributor, spoke about government
“terrorism busts” and the recent Peter King “Muslim
radicalization” hearings.
He noted that many of the federal government’s busts are
often hyped as major accomplishments by officials only to quietly fizzle out
later on when charges against suspects turn out to be bogus or exaggerated.
Uygur also spoke out against King’s refusal to denounce
terrorism himself despite providing support for the Irish Republican Army,
which has been classified as a terrorist organization itself.
He spoke of the need to support the MLFA in the current
climate of Islamophobia and misunderstanding, calling it important to the
future of civil rights, liberties and justice in America.
ADC-Michigan’s Advisory Board Chairman Shereef Akeel, an
attorney and civil rights advocate, also spoke about the importance of
protecting civil rights and liberties, along with Khalil Meek, the MLFA’s
executive director and an outspoken advocate for legal justice and fair, equal
treatment of all people under the law, and Dawud Walid, the executive director
of the Council of American-Islamic Relations-Michigan.
Over $80,000 was raised on the evening to continue the
MLFA’s mission of serving the community going forward.
