DEARBORN — ACCESS will partner with Focus: HOPE in Detroit
to paint walls, build community gardens, plant flowers and pack food boxes for
families in need on Saturday, May 14 beginning at noon. The event will take
place at Focus-HOPE’s Center for Children.
Arab Americans in 22 U.S. cities are set to engage in the
projects as part of the 7th annual event, which is coordinated by ACCESS
through AmeriCorps to encourage volunteerism through a wide variety of
different groups.
Focus: HOPE was formed in the wake of the 1967 Detroit riots
to overcome racial and economic divisions in the city. The organization is
committed to providing “intelligent and practical action to overcome
racism, poverty and injustice” in the community.
The mission of Service Day is to foster and encourage
volunteerism and service among diverse communities and connect people through
the common experience of giving back. It also highlights Arab Americans’
commitment to serving their local communities. For more information about
Service Day contact Sandy Al at 313.843.2844. Volunteers will meet at ACCESS’
headquarters at 2651 Saulino Court, and 651 Schaefer Road in Dearborn at 9:30
a.m. where they will receive transportation to the volunteer site in Detroit.
