DEARBORN HEIGHTS — In a 4-2 city council vote, the Dearborn Heights
general government budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, beginning on July 1,
was approved last Tuesday. Coming in at $36.4 million, the approved budget was
$1.7 million less than that of the current fiscal year. Councilwoman Janet
Badalow and Councilwoman Margaret Van Hourten both voted against the motion to
approve, wanting to spend more time looking over the budget. The approval by
the remainder of the council came one week before the city charter deadline,
which had been approaching on June 6. The charter tax levy was also set at the
meeting, coming in at 6.324 mills, the same as the current year.
