ANN ARBOR — The Radio Television Digital News Association announced that a 2011 RTDNA/UNITY award has been given to the “Muslims in Michigan” series by Michigan Radio.
The award honors outstanding television, radio and online journalism focused on diversity.
Presented since 1999, the purpose of the award is to encourage and showcase journalistic excellence in covering issues of race and ethnicity.
The “Muslims in Michigan” project was formed out of a partnership between Michigan Radio and the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. This five part radio series, which first aired in 2010, examined life for Muslim people living in Michigan and their cultural, political, ethnic, and social lives of the diverse group including recent converts to Islam. It also featured guest speakers and community conversations in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Grand Rapids. More info on the series can be found at www.muslimsinmichigan.org.
