DETROIT – After a 7-2 vote, the city council and Mayor Dave Bing reached a budget agreement on Thursday as time wound down on the current fiscal year.
Services such as police, fire, the People Mover transportation system and others were kept but Bing has warned that more cuts and layoffs will happen.
The city council earlier voted against Bing’s plan to cut $30 million from the council being re-added to his original $3.1 billion budget plan. The council also added for $50 million more in reductions on top of Bing’s original $200 million in cuts but Bing’s veto was overidden by the city council, with members saying that the city is in dire straits and more cuts were needed.
