TULSA, OKLA. — The popular clothing company Abercrombie & Fitch was found to have committed religious discrimination earlier this month after they refused to hire a Muslim teen who was wearing hijab (head scarf) when she interviewed at their store in the city.
Samantha Elauf was turned down in June 2008 because of her scarf according to a federal court ruling.
Another suit against the company in June of this year on behalf of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which also represented Elauf, alleged that they violated Title VII when they fired a 19-year-old Muslim woman for wearing a hijab at her sales job in California.
The clothing chain, known for its “look policy” and “All-American,” beach-inspired clothes, earlier had to pay $40 million in a settlement to a class including African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Latinos who were also denied employment.
