Conviction made in gas station shooting of nephew
DETROIT – Hayes Bacall, 51, the owner of Dexter Cash Checking in Detroit, was convicted of first-degree murder on Aug.18. Some jurors cried minutes after the verdict according to reports.
After three days of deliberations, Bacall was found guilty by the jury in a ruling that was controversial within the large family. Some felt the man who was shot and killed, Saif Jameel, Bacall’s nephew, had threatened Bacall and that Bacall had acted in self defense during the incident at a Troy BP gas station last summer. The argument was over $400,000 in loans Jameel had not allegedly been keeping up with. Defense attorneys argued the killing was in self-defense as Jameel was reaching for a gun but Prosecutor Ken Frazee argued that Bacall shot Jameel in anger and the killing was premeditated.
