DEARBORN — On Friday, August 12th, members of the Detroit area community attended the Michigan Dialysis Summit at the Sanford-Brown College Dearborn Campus to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease (CKD). The event was sponsored by Sanford-Brown College, Dialysis Patient Citizens, and DaVita Inc. The Michigan Dialysis Summit focused on bringing attention to the more than 12,500 Michigan residents who rely on lifesaving dialysis treatment and the more than 30 million Americans who suffer from CKD. Attendees included an array of guests including healthcare professionals, patients, concerned citizens, political figures, and SB Dialysis Tech students.
The Dialysis Summit featured Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (MI-14), who addressed the state of the health care system and provided a public policy perspective. Dialysis Patient Citizens (DPC) Patient Ambassador Julia Herzog shared her personal struggle with kidney failure and discussed the importance of patient advocacy. Dr. Robert Provenzano, Vice President of Medical Affairs at DaVita, discussed clinical advances in the treatment of kidney disease, and DPC Executive Director Hrant Jamgochian acted as host of the event and touched on health disparities and kidney disease.
