Some residents in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County might feel comfortable going to their local hospitals for diagnostic check-ups. But since 1980, many patients have been comfortable taking an alternative route — getting their medical testing done by the top diagnostic company in the area, Basha Diagnostics, without having to step foot in a hospital.

Basha Diagnostics, a multi-site diagnostic imaging company that has been competing with the local neighborhood hospitals since opening up its first location in Royal Oak in 1980, was founded by Dr. Yahya Basha, who came to the United States in 1972 after getting his pre-med and medical degrees from the University of Damascus in Syria.
Upon arriving in Detroit, Dr. Basha did his internship and residency, specializing in radiology, at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. After serving at the hospital for six years, Basha decided to go independent and open up his own clinic nearby.
“We have been able to withstand the competition from the hospitals by building trust with our patients,” said Dr. Basha. “A lot of times at hospitals, patients get treated like they’re on an assembly line, never really getting the attention and resources they need.”
Another advantage patients have at Basha Diagnostics is that on average, the tests are less costly than at the competing hospitals. The company accepts all insurances to help keep costs down for their patients. The company also promotes that they are more likely to avoid common mistakes such as misdiagnosing and unnecessary surgeries, which tend to happen more at hospitals.
“Our average patient turn-around time is 48 hours,” said Basil Basha, 29, who holds the position of Head of Marketing and Sales. “Hospitals can take weeks to diagnose a patient, but we have top equipment and a faster way of establishing a definitive diagnosis.”
Basha’s main office building is located at 30701 Woodward Ave in Royal Oak. |
One of the newest pieces of equipment Basha Diagnostics carries at their locations is MRI equipment by Siemens, the Germany-based healthcare supplier that utilizes the latest technologies to help reduce radiation exposure and harm toward women and children. This type of equipment may be too new and costly to be found at the local hospitals, according to Dr. Basha.
Basha Diagnostics currently has four clinics in Southeast Michigan: a Royal Oak location, a Sterling Heights location and two locations in Dearborn. In addition they also have a main office in Royal Oak located off of Woodward Ave.
In the near future however, that’s expected to change.
“Our goal is to down-size to three locations and focus on making each location a Super Center,” stated Dr. Basha. “We are putting an emphasis on efficiency…having rapid communication between our clinics, which will lead to better and faster results.”
Plans are to merge the two locations in Dearborn and move the clinic in Royal Oak into the office building located on Woodward Ave. The focus will then be shifted to expanding each location into larger, full-scale “Super Centers.”
The company currently employs close to 110 people, which includes 20 doctors who are sub-specialized in specific fields. According to Dr. Basha, many of these doctors have already had years of experience.
“Most of our technicians come from spending years in hospitals,” Dr. Basha stated. “They speak with authority and knowledge. The company provides them with more benefits than they would receive working at a hospital.”
Even with the large amount of help, Dr. Basha is still a very busy man, working 7 days a week trying to make sure every clinic is running smoothly. He says he rarely takes vacations and to this day still attends to patient needs if necessary.
“He is a workaholic,” stated Basil Basha about his father. “He thinks about the company from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to bed.”
With the company occupying the majority of his time, Dr. Basha still finds a way to be a pretty well-rounded family man. A father of seven children and being one of 11 siblings himself, even his employees tend to see him as a family man in the workplace.
“His patients are like his family,” said Rania Emera, 31, of Rochester Hills, who holds the position of administrator and has worked for the company for eight years. “I have learned a lot working for him. We can all learn from someone who has had so much experience and success.”
Audra Kasperek, 29, of Macomb Township agrees.
“It’s a fantastic job,” she said of her Special Projects Coordinator position. “Dr. Basha is involved in every aspect of this business…and he has an incredible sense of humor,” she added.
Dr. Basha also finds time to always be politically active. He has made it clear that his company is bipartisan, and has been closely involved with both Democratic and Republican candidates who have emphasized positions on medical and healthcare issues that are beneficial healthcare consumers.
Some of his previous notable political involvement includes being invited by Hillary Clinton to the first-ever iftar dinner at the White House in 1994 and serving as a board member for the Department of Education during George W. Bush’s first administration.
In addition, Dr. Basha is also involved in organizations such as the Arab American Institute, the Arab American and Chaldean Council and the American Muslim Council.
Dr. Basha claims that being culturally involved within the community in both religious and ethnic outreach helps his company deal with sensitivities that tend to be ignored at competing hospitals and clinics.
“We get a large number of ethnic groups who feel more comfortable coming to our clinics because we are aware of cultural sensitivities that get overlooked elsewhere,” Dr. Basha stated.
And in spite of what might seem like countless accomplishments for the company over the last three decades, Dr. Basha continues to set goals for the company’s future.
“We are always closely watching international trends and incorporating them into the company,” Dr. Basha stated. “That’s why we will always have a higher level of performance. The people we service value the technology and savings we offer.”
