DETROIT — Last Wednesday, federal authorities announced the arrests of 13 people, including 10 from metro Detroit, in an international car-theft scheme. The vehicles, which were rented and then reported as stolen or carjacked in Detroit, were allegedly taken to Canada where suspects hoped they would not be detected and then shipped to Iraq for profits.
Among the cars stolen were SUVs and luxury sedans in what was dubbed “Operation Hot Wheels.”
The vehicles were found in multiple cases in shipping containers at the Port of Montreal headed for Iraq through Turkey.
Those charged from metro Detroit according to the indictment as reported by the Detroit Free Press are:
Sterling Heights residents including Adnan Hana; Jason Hana; Heather Hana, 29; Nazar Quiryaqous, 46; Sabah Hermiz, 57, and Danieal Korkis. Korkis has not been arrested, however. Five others of Sterling Heights were charged in a criminal complaint. Charges against the defendants include transportation of stolen property and conspiracy charges.
