DETROIT — Detroit businessman Hayes Bacall, a Chaldean immigrant, has been sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of first-degree murder in August of his nephew, Saif Jameel, at Jameel’s BP gas station in Troy. 

Police and prosecutors said Bacall was angry over a $400,000 loan that Jameel had stopped making payments on after he received it to build a Starbucks in Troy. 

Bacall’s attorneys had argued that the shooting was in self-defense after Jameel pulled a gun during the argument. 

The large family was sharply divided over the sentencing. Bacall, who has a wife and several young children, will not be eligible for parole under Michigan law.
