DETROIT — Among the budget recommendations from the Detroit City Council for cuts sent to Mayor Dave Bing are layoffs of 500 public safety employees, cutting executive salaries and a raise in fares for the People Mover and buses.
Altogether, it amounts to about $68 million in cuts. It is not known whether Bing will accept any of the recommendations. Council members want stronger cuts than what Bing presented earlier this month.
Bing proposed givebacks of $40 million from all outsourcing services and city workers along with about 1,000 job cuts and for the state to return more than $220 million in revenue sharing and more. Council members also want all city executives to cut their salaries to $100,000. Members also called for 2,300 job cuts.
