DETROIT – After nearly four years of back-and-forth negotiations, Wayne County and its largest union have an agreement.
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said in a statement earlier this week that the county and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees have reached a new contract agreement, which was given final approval on Thursday. Ficano reportedly said that the agreement is similar to the 10% cuts that other county workers including Ficano and his administration have all taken.
The county lost a court ruling over an imposed 20% pay cut on AFSCME workers when it was ruled illegal according to the Detroit Free Press.
“This agreement embodies my overall commitment in shared sacrifice,” Ficano said. “It’s a win-win for all of us, but most importantly the taxpayers of Wayne County.”
