Mayor Windom meets with city owners to discuss safety measures

HIGHLAND PARK – City police have jailed two men believed to be connected with last week’s fatal shooting of clerk Hassan Ali Hussein on parole violations Monday according to Mayor Deandre Windom.
The men remain in jail while investigators build a case against them, Windom said after meeting with local gas station owners to discuss the crime and safety measures they can take in order to protect themselves from possible future incidents.
Their names have not been released, but they are suspected in the killing of Hussein, 59, which took place last Wednesday at around 3:30 a.m. when one man purposely dropped a bottle of juice in order to lure the clerk out from behind the protective glass he had been working behind. The man’s partner kept the door ajar by placing a stick between it keep it open from outside as Hussein tried unsuccessfully to lock it remotely using a switch. A struggle between the second man and Hussein ended with two gunshots to the clerk’s legs and one to his chest that proved fatal.
Windom said he brought together all of the gas station owners to talk about prevention in light of the incident, which stunned and saddened local workers.
According to local reports the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has not yet received a warrant request for either suspect.
