DEARBORN – A recognition and support banquet was held for Dr. Suleiman Barada on Thursday, February 23 at the Byblos Banquet Hall in Dearborn. Dr. Barada, who is a community activist, was recently diagnosed with cancer and is seeking an alternative form of chemotherapy, which is a trial therapy that is not covered by major health insurance companies.

Dr. Barada accepted awards given to him from local community organizations amongst a crowd of over 400. Among the organizations that recognized his contributions were ACCESS, the Yemen American Benevolent Association (YABA), IEEE and some close friends and family of Sulieman.
“Dr. Suleiman worked endlessly to make the world and his community a better place,” said the YABA plaque that was presented to him. “He is a leading activist who fought for principles like social equality justice and human rights.”
Dr. Barada expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming reception.
“I’m usually overwhelmed if one of my friends visits me, but how about having 400-500 people who are my friends and family honoring me?” Barada told the crowd. “I certainly would like to thank everyone.”
Dr. Barada went on to describe his illness, assuring his friends that he would continue fighting the battle against cancer, despite the grim forecast by his doctors.
His health insurance plan does not cover trial or alternative forms of chemotherapy. His friends and family have created an emergency medical fund to pay for expenses not covered by his health insurance.
