Tense debates between Christian missionaries and Muslim locals were a common occurrence during the three-day festival. |
In total, ten people from Christian missionary groups were arrested on Friday after bringing along with them a severed pig’s head and signs that read “You’re going to burn in hell,” and “Muhammad is a liar, false prophet, child molesting pervert.” The reception from the missionary groups, one of which was called the Bible Believers, was not met well by some of the local teenagers, who engaged in back and forth confrontations which included throwing rocks and water bottles before the arrests were made.
A few Muslim demonstrators were holding peaceful signs in response to the anti-Islamic protestors that were arrested two days earlier. |
“This sign is sending a message of peace, saying we are Muslims and if those people are carrying signs disrespecting our prophets, we in return cannot react by disrespecting Jesus, because he is our prophet as well. And Jesus is a prophet that we respect and who we dearly know was purified,” stated Mohammed Mousa, a Dearborn resident. “Those extremists tried to manipulate all of the kids. All of the older people knew that this is the reaction they wanted. My reaction was to not say anything, but to instead make these signs.”
