DEARBORN — An “Arab American Diabetes Health Fair” is being held in collaboration with the University of Michigan Brehm Center for Diabetes Research, University of Michigan Health System, ACCESS, and Oakwood Hospital, the Brehm Scholars’ Society.
It’s free, and will be held at Fordson High School here on Sep. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
The fair provides free glucose, cholesterol (LDL and HDL) and blood pressure screenings with one-on-one follow-ups for patients.
There will also be lectures in Arabic and English on diabetes prevention and intervention presented by the ACCESS Chronic Disease Supervisor Hiam Hamade.
The main goal is for the health fair to be accessible and culturally sensitive, with a focus on education and prevention. The event is partially funded by the University of Michigan Central Student Government.
The Brehm Scholars’ Society is a group of Fordson High School graduates at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor that are awarded full-ride scholarships by William K. Brehm. Mr. Brehm is a graduate of Fordson and UM, graduating with a masters in physics and mathematics. He is also the former Assistant Secretary of the Army and Assistant Secretary of Defense. He has donated millions of dollars to UM diabetes research, recently building the UM Brehm Center for Diabetes Research, which houses a team of researchers working to both prevent and treat all types of diabetes. The event will encourage students in our community to continue the legacy of Mr. Brehm, a man whose selflessness is a model for all.
