In a July 2012 published study by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, over 684 Michigan high schools were examined and ranked according to their average academic performance on two key standardized tests, the ACT and Michigan Merit Examination.
Among all schools, Star International Academy was honored with the highest rank and score in Michigan, followed closely by Universal Academy with the third highest rank and score. Both schools are part of Hamadeh Educational Services (HES) charter school system. HES was founded by Nawal Hamadeh, a Lebanese American, and innovative educator, who’s been called one of the most influential businesswomen in the community.
Successful student performance on the Michigan Merit Examination is required for graduation, while their ACT scores are often a crucial component of college admissions. The Mackinac study evaluated student data in light of their socioeconomic background; a key factor that is outside of school control, but influences student success.
The proportion of students eligible for free and reduced lunch, coupled with student exam scores, allowed researchers to evaluate student success and determine if individual schools were measuring above or below their projected performance, given the challenges their students may face.
Star International Academy and Universal Academy, both Oakland University authorized schools, not only outperformed their projected measures, but also their suburban counterparts.
According to Dr. Michael Van Beek, the Director of this study, “there is much to be celebrated” because these findings demonstrate “how well a school is doing despite the obstacles faced by the students.”
