The Imam Chirri Commitment to Excellence Award was presented to community activist Ahmad Bajjey, a retired Dearborn fireman and Dr. Sally Howell, assistant professor of history at the University of Michigan Dearborn. Imam Mohamad Jawad Chirri was the original spiritual leader and founding member of the ICA. Both Howell and Bajjey have made great contributions to the community. Howell was a major contributor to the book, ‘Arab Detroit 9/11: Life in the Terror Decade.’ It chronicles challenges Arab Americans in metro Detroit faced following the tragic events of Sep. 11 including heightened prejudice, government surveillance, and political scapegoating, while still enjoying political, economic and cultural influence.
