DEARBORN — More than 100 people gathered at the Lebanese American Heritage Club here Tuesday in celebration of the 69th anniversary of Lebanon’s Independence Day, and the LAHC’s 30th anniversary. On Nov. 22, 1943 Lebanon gained its independence from France.
The celebration of Lebanon Independence Day was held early since much of the Shi’a Muslim community will be mourning during Ashura next week. Guests had dinner and were entertained with music, and participated in the traditional Arabic dabke dance.
Members of the LAHC gathered taking photos while cutting a cake featuring Lebanon’s flag in honor of the organization’s 30-year milestone.
The LAHC was established in 1982, and has served the community through its tremendous charitable efforts since then. The group also has one of the largest scholarship programs in region, and distributes 70 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each annually. In 2013 the LAHC scholarship program will reach its 25th anniversary.
In southeast Michigan, Lebanese Americans have contributed immensely to the region with their entrepreneurial spirit and culture.
The LAHC has provided the Lebanese and greater Arab American community with the social, cultural, educational and athletic programs needed for its growing population.
LAHC President Suehaila Amen congratulated Dearborn’s new 19th District Court Judge Sam Salamey on his victory during the Nov. 6 general election.
