DEARBORN — College students from the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund were stationed at the Leo’s Coney Island here on Greenfield Road Tuesday to raise money for the PCRF which provides free medical care for sick and injured children in the Middle East. The restaurant agreed to donate 10 percent of every customer’s bill to the PCRF.
The PCRF is a non-profit humanitarian relief effort. In 2011 the PCRF reached its 20th year as an organization providing specialized medical care, surgery, and other humanitarian aid for sick and injured children in the Middle East. “I think it’s great because you get to help out not only Palestinian children, it’s children all around the Middle East, and you could raise money so easily for children who are in desperate need of it,” said PCRF University of Michigan Dearborn chapter member Christina Hamzy, 19.
The PCRF’s humbled beginnings include getting children in the Arab World medical treatment in the United States, and providing thousands of children from Lebanon’s camps and war torn Iraq crucial specialized surgery all over the world. The PCRF has remained focused on working to heal the wounds of war, poverty and occupation in the Middle East.
Hamzy among several other young Arab Americans were stationed at the restaurant throughout the whole day volunteering their time to the PCRF’s cause. “This is really a great cause. You can help bring a child here to get help, so the end result is really great,” she said.
She noted that youth have also had other fundraisers including bake sales, and food drives to help the needy and raise money for the PCRF. Hamzy says boxes are also stationed around the University of Dearborn Michigan campus for people to donate canned goods to. “If you’ve heard about this organization you should definitely be involved in it,” Hamzy said.
