DEARBORN-Various organizations in the community came out during the week of Thanksgiving to reach out to families in need. Below is an overview of some of the organizations who helped brighten families Thanksgiving this year.
LAHC distributes turkeys to needy seniors
DEARBORN — The Lebanese American Heritage Club held a turkey drive Tuesday morning at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center and distributed more than 110 turkeys to needy seniors as part of its We The People Feed The People program.
“I want to thank the Lebanese American Heritage Club, and wish their members a happy Thanksgiving and many blessings,” said Louise Mansfield.
Twenty five boxes containing four to five Butterball brand turkeys each were donated to the LAHC by Meijer in support of the program. “It feels really good to give back,” LAHC-YLC President Hussein M. Hachem said.
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano was also present, and helped give away turkeys with LAHC members.
LAHC Executive Director Wassim Mahfouz says the group is currently collecting coats among other winter clothing as part of its Kill the Cold Clothing Drive. On Saturday, Nov. 24 the LAHC is accepting donations for the winter program from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at its location, 4337 Maple Street Dearborn. There are also donation boxes for the clothing drive on the campuses of the University of Michigan Dearborn, Henry Ford Community College and Wayne State University. LAHC can also arrange to pick up clothing.
“That’s what God put us on this earth to do, to help out one another,” Belva Daly, who also received a turkey said. The LAHC is also still collecting donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
LAHC teamed up with the city of Dearborn’s recreation department’s senior division. Only needy seniors were allowed to sign up, and receive vouchers to get turkeys. One turkey was given to every couple.
“This is our way of honoring our seniors, and expressing gratitude for everything they’ve done,” Mahfouz said.
ACC 2012 turkey giveaway
The Arab American and Chaldean Council would like to thank the Associated Food and Petroleum Dealers, Ambassador Bridge Company and Wolverine Packing Company for its generous donations at its annual turkey drive. The ACC distributed a total of 175 turkeys in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties. It’s been holding its turkey drive for over 20 years.
“Thank you ACC for the amazing work you do in the community. We appreciate the opportunity to help and look forward to our continued partnership,” said Jennifer Dennis of the Ambassador Bridge company.
HYPE Athletics assists local families with Thanksgiving drive
On Tuesday HYPE Athletics held a turkey drive at it’s recreation center located on Warren Ave. with a goal to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to under-privileged families in the Detroit Metro area. In a collaborative effort with Meijer, US Foods, Super Greenland, Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Dearborn Fresh, Super Greenland, local organizations and local mosques, over 250 dinners were provided to the families in need.
Around 25 staff members from HYPE, Volunteers of America and Detroit World Outreach helped distribute the turkeys. Recyclable bags, donated by Meijer were also given out with the 10-12 lb turkeys. Inside of each bag were other food items for the Thanksgiving dinners, which included a can of green beans, a can of corn, macaroni and cheese, and two water bottles.
AFPD provides turkeys to underserved families in Michigan and Ohio
The AFPD held its annual turkey drive recently, the organization distributed 6,000 turkeys to needy families in Michigan and Ohio along with donated food, and refreshments. Since 1980, AFPD has given out 60,000 Turkeys during Thanksgiving.
ASU members take part in turkey drive for the needy
Members of the Arab Student Union distributed over 40 turkey dinners to needy families at the Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services’ (ACCESS) office located in the city’s southend. The turkeys were donated by Midamar, and the dry goods were provided by Eastborn Market here, in addition to teachers and students from Fordson High School.
