DEARBORN – 19th District Court Judge Sam Salamey, who recently was elected as the first Arab American judge in the city of Dearborn, has been appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve as the Chief Judge in Dearborn’s courthouse. The position of Chief Judge, previously held by Richard Wygonik, means Salamey will be responsible for budgeting, financing, and personnel at the courthouse.
The Michigan Supreme Court selects the Chief Judge based on who they feel is the most suitable for the position. Salamey, the newest Judge at the courthouse, will work alongside Judge Mark W. Somers and Judge William C. Hultgren.
A member of Salamey’s campaign told The Arab American News that he was honored to be appointed into the position and promises the citizens of Dearborn that he will carry out the duties of Chief Judge to the best of his abilities.
In November, Salamey won the race for the 19th District Court Judge against incumbent Richard Wygonik. His run on the bench, which is set to begin in January 2013, will kick-start on December 12, when Salamey will be sworn in by Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court Honorable Brian Zahra, who was also re-elected in November. The Investiture Ceremony will be held at the Michael A. Guido Theater at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.
