DEARBORN – The Yemeni American Committee celebrated Yemen Independence Day recently at Dearborn Manor here with about 100 people present on Nov. 30. The South Yemen declaration of independence from the United Kingdom is held on Nov. 30 every year. While North Yemen had been independent since November 1, 1918, it wasn’t until November 30, 1967 that South Yemen achieved full independence. On Dec. 5 the celebration continued at Blue Cafe here, with a cultural event. Public officials in attendance included Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Hamtramck’s police chief, three Hamtramck City Council members, newly elected judge for Dearborn’s 19th District Court Sam Salamey, Imam Mohamad Mardini of Dearborn’s American Muslim Center, the Consul General of Lebanon Bilal Kabalan and Waqqas Saad Albayati, vice consul of the republic of Iraq to Detroit.
