LANSING – Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed bills on Thursday that alter the rules for recalling elected officials such as shortening the time period in which people can gather signatures needed to recall elected officials. Democrats have blasted the move which changes the number of days from 90 to 60 days to garner signatures. According to Gov. Snyder, officials subjected to recalls will have opponents instead of the current system under which recall elections are an up-or-down vote. Snyder indicated this ensures constituents receive constant representation rather than having an empty seat. The opponents will be selected in primary elections. Recall petitions now cannot be filed against officials serving two year terms in the first or last six months of the officials’ term.
